The magnitude 8.8 earthquake caused part of the peninsula to sink by about six feet and set off volcanic eruptions, according to the <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/russia-kamchatka-earthquake-geology-2109724">Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences</a>.
