Alum Nathaniel Hartinger Named UC ��ԭ�� Fire Chief

After more than a year serving as interim fire chief, Nathaniel Hartinger has been officially selected chief of the UC ��ԭ�� Fire Department. The announcement follows a competitive, national search.

Alison Rader picked up the pink and green towel she had used as a mat, drew a deep breath and smiled. “I’ve been feeling kind of keyed up,” the rising senior said. “Yoga in the morning helps release some of that tension.”

Soon the statistics major was off to class in a fast-paced, six-week course in calculus, but not before Summer Sessions staff, who had organized the yoga class, invited her to the next day’s coffee and donut gathering for students before exams in the first summer session.

UC ��ԭ�� Sees Jump in Records of Invention, Driven by Health Innovation

UC ��ԭ�� has experienced a surge in records of invention (ROIs), marking a strong rebound in research innovation. The university filed 191 ROIs in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2025, up from 140 the prior year, a 36% increase that reverses a multiyear decline dating back to fiscal 2021.

An ROI is a confidential university document used to formally capture an invention, its details and inventors, serving as the initial step in evaluating the potential for patentability and commercialization. On average, anywhere from 10% to 25% of ROIs eventually become patents.

Donors supported a wide range of university programs and initiatives, helping drive student success, fuel groundbreaking research, enhance health care and much more.

UC ��ԭ�� Admits Record High Number for First-Year Studies

The University of California, ��ԭ��, has offered undergraduate admission for fall 2025 to 8.6% more applicants than last year — including a record high number for first-year status, according to statistics released today (July 28) by the University of California system.

Offers of admission were made to a record high of 45,963 applicants for first-year status (a 10.4% increase over last year) and 9,776 as transfer students (a 0.8% increase) for a total of 55,739. Of that total, 34,088 are California residents, an increase of 1.7% over last year.

Fire, Police to Train at ARC in August

The Activities and Recreation Center, or ARC, will be closed on the mornings of Aug. 19, 21 and 22 for a training exercise. The UC ��ԭ�� and city of ��ԭ�� police and fire departments will be practicing their response and coordination during an active shooter incident.

The drills will involve loud noises including simulated gunshots. There will be police and fire vehicles in Lot 25 and in the loading areas behind the ARC, and parking availability will be limited in the area .

UC ��ԭ�� Grad Student Named New Student Regent

The University of California Board of Regents today (July 16) appointed UC ��ԭ�� graduate student Miguel Craven as the 2026-27 student regent. Craven will serve from July 1, 2025-June 30, 2026 as student regent-designate. He will have voting privileges when his one-year term as student regent begins on July 1, 2026.

Faculty Recognized for Mentoring Underrepresented, Underserved Students

Five faculty members have been selected for a 2025 Chancellor’s Fellowship recognizing their work to, in the words of the organizers, “foster a learning environment where all students can develop the skills to be successful.”

Chancellor Gary S. May told recipients he was proud to highlight their “commitment to reducing opportunity gaps for underrepresented students and/or students from underserved communities.”
